To all of my higher education colleagues, as well as educators in any arena, as we start a new semester, join me in making sure that our motives/hearts/attitudes are in the right place to further the education of our students. It’s about them, not us. Let’s meet them where they are, listen to their needs, and provide the answers and knowledge that they deserve to be successful. To that end….
Graduation is over; I’ve been set free!
It’s finally time, for me, to become me.
Long summer days are here no more;
I’m so eager to learn, so eager to explore.
This brave new chapter, this next level degree,
And those that will allow my eyes to truly see –
A foundation of learning, a base on which to build,
Knowledge that I yearn, wisdom to be instilled.
Off I go, ignorance and all;
It’s times like this, I do feel small.
But alas it will change; it’s time to grow,
To learn the things that I need to know.
Before I can start, payments need to be made;
I have it all ready, and even my aid!
The one question I have: what do I owe?
I was told very quickly that I should already know.
The first day is here, schedule in hand;
But where do I go in this strange new land?
Ah, someone to ask, someone who can show,
But all I got was, “That’s something you should know.”
No worries or fears, I found my place;
First row of the class, they can see my face.
Hand raised high! I stopped the flow.
In return I received, “That’s something you should know.”
No worries again, as it was, after all,
A very stupid question; I had too much gall.
I need to check my grades; I think I did so well!
How do I retrieve them? My parents I need to tell.
Log in to my account is what I need to do,
But I don’t know what that is or the steps to go through.
I should ask for assistance on where I should go.
Maybe I shouldn’t have asked. “I should already know.”
I always thought that college was about trying to transcend
My current level of knowledge, a new world to begin.
But now I’m not so certain; now I need to know
How to learn all the things that I’m already supposed to know.
